An Evening in the Country by JD DeHart

Whining music like a warbling
voice comes streaming up from
the hollow.

We are gathered around
a pan, shelling beans, listening
to the metallic ping of sound.

A tree stands above us, the one
the white cat ran up to escape
the pack of dogs that raved through.

One day the tree will fall, but not
today, not even this decade.

JD DeHart is a writer and teacher.  He has recently been nominated for Best of the Net and his chapbook, The Truth About Snails, is available on Amazon.
